Policy brief for the Convention on Biological Diversity 2010

The meeting of the Convention on Biological Diversity in 2010 (COP 10) has put the biodiversity target for 2020 on the agenda. These targets in fact set the agenda regarding biodiversity policies for the coming years. Wetlands International international has used this document to advocate for improved  targets; focusing on the role of healthy ecosystems for water supplies and carbon storage.

The report presents the first overview ever of peatland carbon data for all countries and regions of the world.  For every country/area information is given on extent and status of peatlands, volume of the peat resource and on CO2 emissions from different types of land use, both for the year 1990 as well as for the year 2008. 

The review charts the main achievements, as well as projects, finance and publications of Wetlands International during 2009. Furthermore, it highlights our work in relation to the Copenhagen Climate summit and a personal story from one of our projects. New this year is also our Climate Neutrality Report, as promised in last year’s Annual Review.

African Waterbird Census Newsletter No. 4

This newsletter covers outcomes that have resulted from the UNEP-GEF African-Eurasian Flyways Project also known as the Wings Over Wetlands Project (WOW). The newsletter highlights the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation between the lead project partners to strengthen the conservation of waterbirds and wetlands, the launch of the Flyway Training Kit which is a capacity building resource that provides a flyway approach to conservation of migratory waterbirds and their habitats and the Critical Site Network tool that provides an access to information on waterbird species and their sites covered by the African-Eurasian Waterbird Agreement (AEWA).

Dead planet, living planet

This UNEP publication features many case examples of the work of Wetlands International. Editor Ritesh Kumar collected showcases from Wetlands International from all around the world; from the mangroves of West Africa to the peatlands in Southeast Asia. “Dead planet, living planet: Biodiversity and ecosystem restoration for sustainable development” is a contribution to the UN’s International Year of Biodiversity and is a complement to the UNEP-hosted Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB) which is bringing visibility to the wealth of the world’s natural capital.

Policy brief into World Bank Palm Oil Strategy Consultations

Wetlands International participated in a multi-stakeholder consultation process organised by World Bank on 3-4 June 2010 which aimed to identify how World Bank can address issues facing the palm oil sector. Since there are increasing concerns about sustainability issues in the sector, particularly related to palm oil production in Indonesia and Malaysia (the two largest producers of crude palm oil) the World Bank Group is undertaking this strategy preparation exercise for its activities and future direction for the palm oil sector. This policy brief holds Wetlands International’s input to this meeting.

The new Flyway Training Kit is a one-of-a-kind resource in flyway-scale conservation and represents an important step towards meeting core strategic objectives of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands and AEWA. This innovative conservation tool by Wetlands International and partners is designed to build capacity to plan, implement, monitor and engage in effective flyway-scale conservation of migratory waterbirds and wetland habitats in Africa and Eurasia.
