Call for EU to reject biofuel target

Wetlands International supports the joint NGO campaign against the target to use 10% biofuels in all fuels for transport in the EU in 2020. Such a target would have an enormous impact on land use, water use and wetlands all over the world. Moreover, much of the biofuel production causes more greenhouse gas emissions than fossil fuels.

The study 'Biofuels in Africa' commissioned by Wetlands International, shows that especially wetlands and their values for people will suffer from growing demands for biofuels. Biofuel production in Asia (mostly palm oil) is causing enormous greenhouse gas emissions due to the use and drainage of peatlands.

Wetlands International would rather see a target for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions instead. If biofuels are supported at all, they should be subject to strict criteria. Read more about our work on biofuels.

See the joint NGO letter to the ITRE commission of the European Parliament.
